Amazing song and video. This has been getting a lot of play in the US on Radio Paradise, a wonderful web radio station. It put enough of a hook in me to order the CD. It really is a shame that neither Amazon or iTunes or this would be gracing a lot of iPods here in the US.

I found this video a while ago via stumble upon but never actually check out Gotye’s home page.. I gotta say.. I love his work.. I have listened to numerous tracks. However this track.. especially the video itself reminds me alot of Peter Gabriels work. Not to say its a bad thing.. as I am a HUGE gabriel fan. But its nice to see this kind of music in the mainstream genres.

  11. Kas Says:

A friend just passed me this video and I’m hooked.. Can’t turn the repeat button off - stays up all night!

  12. Dylan Says:

Hey can someone help me out with the meaning of the video itself? dylanmgjohnson@hotmail.com

  13. Sir-Manian Says:

Yeh i Agree with dylan. Wat does teh clip mean?

I can only give you my own interpretation. But that’s what art is about. You throw it out there, and everybody’s going to translate it through their own experiences. I see it as an allegory for our modern world. We have to get jobs and be productive. Sometimes we find happiness along the way. Sometimes not. The creatures are all industrial, so they all have purpose, and now that purpose has lost it’s reason for being over time. So one by one they’re banding together in a little community, and go searching for something more meaningful. As for the singer, he loves the girl he’s singing to, but it seems pretty hopeless, so in the end, he has to leave her planet and look for one that isn’t going dark. My take.

  15. Trevor Says:

I think this is probably my favourite video clip of the last few years. It just fits the song so beautifully. A 5-star audio-visual experience!

  16. Ellen Says:

    my interpretation of the clip:
The man walks around and around the world, just as his love for the girl he cant have has no end. On the way he becomes heart broken and hurt (the follower with crutches) feels stuck and ‘caged’ (bird with cage) has fear for what will happen (scary monster) goes through rage and destruction (destructor) feels alone (monster in the middle of nowhere) and has memorys of his past with her (ghost/skeleton). He eventually is able to get over her, which is symbolized by taking off from the world that he had been circling and is finally free.

  17. Barbara Says:

I feel Ellen has nailed it! This song is soooo special to me, and just the way I feel about a beautiful man who put it on several times when I entered his work…only I feel it is HE who has the problem with his heart…he is so afraid of accepting love and I have sooo much to give): Definitely the BEST romance song EVER!

    just out of curiosity…

does the characters .. represent the day of the weeks ..
while the spider is the mechanism that controls space ,, by the change of time .

that is why you could notice that they keep on walking while ” light ” keeps changing .. spreading ” sorrow , anger , guilt , fear , ego, loneliness and destruction ..

as if the days where the “negative ” side of our existence ..
that we as humans ,, so unready to be enlightened ..
hiding in the bushes of our false beliefs ..
and stuck with vibration of fear .. all throw this ” time ” ..

this is why .. a new age has to arise .. so the days of the week ,, start to stop .. and they ride each other ..
and on top of that .. the machinery of ” time & space ” will be the first one ..
    to leave …

and there you go .. a new world ..
a new age … where every one will be forced to open their eyes ..
    ” third eyes that is ” ..
    and witness the greatness ..

of a beautiful mind that wrote such a master piece ..
a complicated way of telling a simple story ..
    yet ..
    might be ..
the biggest story ever to be known .. by the sons of adam

    :)
